Scum is a system that Lucas arts created, which is basically a the adventure game engine. And scum VM is a modern interpretation of that engine. Scum VM relies on reverse engineering, which is hard and imperfect because you don't have the original designs. But they've done an amazingly good job. It's very easy to use because it's designed to run these games specifically. Most IBM PC emulators are not designed to run one particular game. They're designed to emulate an IBM PC.
