In 1580, Sarmiento created the most detailed and accurate maps yet crafted of the Strait of Magellan. King Philip was impressed and sent him back with orders to fortify the Strait for Spain. He then built a colony on the north shore of the Strait which promptly and disastrously failed as soon as he left it.
