In the late 80s and early 90s, ACT UP chapters started in cities across the US. The number of people with AIDS around the world was steeply climbing. An estimated 100,000 people in the US had died from AIDS since the start of the epidemic. In 1995, the first protease inhibitors were approved. But this miracle cure would come too late for over 300,000 dead in the US for the millions dead worldwide. It is during these years that we see the highest death tolls in the United States.
