In the normal context of machine learning, you're implicitly assuming that we can just apply a whole bunch of tests and safeguards. And so it's not like we're explicitly trying to make them more human-like. It's more like we're trying to get them to do a bunch of tasks and then it just turns out that things like deception are robustly useful for getting higher scores on a wide range of tasks.
