How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: Insights with Donald Robertson

The Stoic Handbook by Jon Brooks

CHAPTER

The Stoic Hard Line

When I read the stoics I feel like they just don't ever see themselves as victims of external events. They want to say that virtue is not only the most important thing and by virtue they mean a kind of moral or practical wisdom strength of character that comes from a particular type of insight and wisdom. So these externals are at best opportunities which become good in the hands of a wise man or bad in the hand of a foolish man. And so they're not really intrinsically good or bad at all but rather they're more like opportunities that we have, advantages or disadvantages.
