If it were some sort of optical illusion, then why would it be consistently the same? It seems much more likely that maybe there would be a busy road that somehow is reflecting light. But if these are moving cars on an interstate or a road, wouldn't that affect the behavior of the light? I don't know. So, but that happens all the time and all it takes is it being really hot.
