Barry's mother told him if he went away to college, she would commit suicide. Barry lived at home in washington heights and attended anwil you uptown in the bronx. The title of his book is actually a quote from a peace concert that happened when he was 17 years old. He talks about being called 'bary son' by people who thought he had died.
