Non-native speakers tend to associate the vowel letter in a weak syllable with a pure vowel sound. If there is an A, you are very likely to put an O sound there. Because we don't always detect the schwa, the brain filters out sounds that don't exist in a native tongue. And if it doesn't exist in your native tongue, it's very likely to filter it out. But you still need something there because you detect a sound. You need more information and then you go to the written word.
