i think that one of the most exciting things about history is how there are big patterns that, in a sense, rule our lives. And we've been reading a book of vallery hanson, voyages and world history. We know from that book that they're all kinds of big patterns, and it's the job of students and professional historians to figure out what the big pattern is. Tthers are easier to see, i think, partly because they're outside ourselves. But sometimes the most important patterns are the ones that are in here,  that we don't see, but they profoundly effect our understanding of our lives.
