The Storytelling Scorecard Was Conversion Effectiveness
In the oral tradition phase of Christianity, historical details were a priority over conversion effectiveness. If a tale of Jesus miraculously feeding 40 people wasn't impressive, maybe next time the Christian said 100 and then 4000. There is no reason to think that the early decades of Christianity was any different. The stories that won the most converts would be most repeated.
