value stocks tend to perform better in periods where the stock market as a whole doesn't do as well. When you're investing in a value stock, that is a company that's trading cheap relative to its current level of earnings or cash flow. That means the expectations priced into the stock are pretty low. Whereas for a growth stock, your expectations were pretty high.
