Are North and South Arbitrary Names for Directions?
North and south are semi arbitrary names for directions. We have the earth as a sphere. It turns on a rotational axis, and we arbitrarily call one end of that rotational axis north or south. East and west also are arbitrary names, but at least in their case, they refer with reference to the direction in which the earth urns.
