The Importance of Genesis One
Genesis one is constantly alluding to those texts and undercutting them. They know that there's this idea that the God in charge is younger than the universe, he came to be in charge of the universe by fighting older gods and goddesses. In Genesis one, these aren't forces of chaos. These are simply things that God created to be good. That punchiness would totally miss if you don't read the Mesopotamia in the ancient Near Eastern material against which it's useful to read that material.
