This is areat il idiom. What does that mean exactly? Because you have definitely heard fever associated with sickness, where your temperature rises and you you have an infection somewhere that your body's fighting off. We also use this idiomatically, if there's any general feeling exists out me, people around you maybe feel something, then if you start to feel it too, you say you're catching the fever.
