CHAPTER

Eve Martyr's Work Is an Example of the Problems We Have in Claiming to Understand the Human Brain

Eve Martyr is a neuroscientist who has spent 30 years trying to understand how the lobster stomach works. She's been able to model the activity of these neurons, to put them all into a computer and to try and predict what will happen if we alter the activity of a neuron X. And for the moment, she still can't predict the activity of the system - which really shows us the problems we've got in claims to understand the human brain or even the maggot brain. If we can't understand how 30 neurons produce a very simple rhythm, I'm not sure that claims we have a great model for understanding how consciousness emerges. That seems to me pretty unlikely.
