1,102 of the original 25,000 Wasp applicants took to the skies as the United States first women to pilot military aircraft. Women had to pass an Army Air Corps physical and then, this is self fucked up, had to cover the cost of transportation to a venture field in Sweetwater, Texas. By December of 1944, Wasp had flown every type of military aircraft manufactured for World War II. Although these women flew military aircraft, they were still technically considered civilians and were not granted military benefits or burials.
