The concept of tracing a profile goes way back, it didn't get the name silhouette until the 1760s in France. It became something that you did when you went to the museum. Do we know what happened to the man that she loved? Did he ever come back from battle? What a great question. But it becomes a legend and the legend becomes a favorite narrative of painters and poets in the 18th and 19th century.
