The Two Faces of Liberalism
There are two, two ways to understand what liberalism and an open society are about. In the Millesian worldview, the importance of free speech was that it allowed for a sort of laboratory of thinking within which eventually the greater, truer idea would win out. The Hobbesian worldview is a worldview in which there are competing irreconcilable truths. Liberalism is not a inexorable march of progress towards the one unitary truth. It is a system that facilitates input petuity, this conflict between ends.
