The History of the Revolution

Many historians estimate that there was an almost even split between those supporting independence and those wanting to remain British. After the war, roughly 60,000 loyalists fled the new nation's refugees - something we conveniently leave out of most American history books. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the United States. Slavery as an institution did not officially end across the entire country until 1865,. with a ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. So that's five more of the countless historical myths far too many people still believe.
