I think people sometimes have an over-simplistic idea of it like we just, you know, do the experiment and find the data. And I would suggest there are two different explanations. It's not that the panpsychist is offering an explanation here. It is reductively explaining the physical world in terms of underlying facts about consciousness. The materialist hopes to give an explanation just the other way around. We can't sort of just go and observe ancient Greece or whatever. So we have to work with the evidence we have,. Look at the different hypotheses, and we do a kind of inference to the best explanation. You'd probably ridicule me if I took that seriously.
