I think the way he treated women as a young man was a real subjectof of grief to him for a long time. He regretted very much the way he'd behaved to women before he met and married my mother. And also, of course, he ditched his fiancee when he did meet her. That was another terrible memory for him, and he writes about that quite a lot.
