There is a kind of opacity. Maybe it's kind of an urge to protect one scene. It feels a bit different if you know what I mean. And then also I do think this is different than a famous painter like Alice Neal making intimate portraits of her neighbors East Harlem in the 40s and 50s. This is maybe more similar to Andy Warhol's screen tests, making art out of showing he was on the scene in the factory. But then it's more personal feeling than that. The double coding of these paintings is the suggestion that you ought to know who these people are that I have cool friends.
