Conversion in Medieval Societies
When slaves were captured, the expectation was that they would be converted to their owners' religion. But conversion in mediaeval societies is all so different and there's a very strong communal aspect to it. When people convert from one religion to another, they don't necessarily lose their association with their original community immediately. So part of just the justification for slavery is that you are forcing this person to come to the right side, and you're going to make them stay there.
