In 1845 at the height of the second great awakening, the Southern Baptist Convention came into existence because they wanted to keep image bearers of God enslaved. And so we basically cut off the corporate dimensions of the gospel so that we could protect slavery and now we're living in the effects of that word throughout America. A lot of the gospels understood individualistically, not because that's what we read in scripture, but because that'swhat we've inherited based on our idolatry of wealth and the enslavement of people in the South.
