Napoleon's Coronation

The coronation was supposed to imbue napoleon's regime with the same type of legitimacy enjoyed by the other monarchies of europe. I don't think that was achieved. This was a totally modern ceremony, a hodge podge of re imagined old traditions mixed with the enlightenment liberalism of the revolution. Napoleon's oath of office even referred to france as a republic. If anything, the pope's involvement in the coronation had drawn attention to the continuing disharmony between rome and paris.
