The Nutcracker and the Mouse King

The libretto for the nutcracker had abandoned the deeper themes and ambiguities of hoffman's story. The main character, now named clara, did not return home after her travels through the kingdom of sweets. So it really wasn't even clear what the point of it all was. On top of his creative dissatisfaction, shakowsky experienced depression and anxiety throughout his life.
