You can write whatever you want it's the great luxury of being a writer is that no one can stand in your way from writing that thing. The more you go towards who you are like what you're saying john, it actually helps the agents and know how to sell you. Also think about you found a sci-fi niche you're an older female sci-fi writer from this culture suddenly it's able to sell you an inside your really good at set pieces you're really good at world building.
