Edwin Hubble used spiral nebulae to figure out how big the universe is. He found a variable star in a spiral nebula, and with Henrietta's equation, he could find its distance from Earth. Most astronomers had thought Andromeda was part of our own galaxy. But Hubble proved that it was so far away, it was outside the Milky Way.
