The Crusades and the Church
The crusades essentially did indeed send an army to Jerusalem and that was how the Knights Templar and the hospitality were created. The wars that went on for 200 years required money and as they got more expensive you had to begin to build navies and hire mercenaries. William the Conqueror invited Jewish merchants in to help commercialize and monetize the economy when he conquered England.
