The Horror of Hunger

The great Irish famine killed an estimated 1 million people over the course of a decade. The starving were driven so mad with hunger that they even ate each other. Mass immigration to the U.S. and Canada created a hellish island of infection and destitution. Some coffin ships had a mortality rate of up to 50%, making them little more than floating cemeteries.
