Sound in the Deep History of the Oceans
Paleontologists have so far found no fossilized, rasping, stridulating or percussive devices on any sea creature. From 200 million years ago, the trilling and chirping of insects were joined by a rich assemblage of amphibian and reptile sounds. Spiny lobsters rubbed the base of their antennae along a track near the ice, eliciting a yelp that can travel more than a kilometer underwater.
