Apple's Struggle to Trademark an Image of a Granny Smith Apple

Apple is trying to trademark an image of a granny Smith Apple in various countries, including in Switzerland. The company could conceivably force any other organization that happens to have an apple in its logo to change. This just seems outright bizarre to me. I don't think it has proven to be trustworthy and considering the data harvesting practices of companies, I also question whether using it for sensitive business purposes or any sensitive purpose is a good idea.
