The Complexity of Genes

A lot of people don't really understand what a gene is and the way that I like to describe that is by saying that genes code for proteins not for behaviors or characteristics. There are some specific genes that correspond in a direct way to particular observable characteristics but those are definitely in the minority. It's even more complicated it's not like one gene codes for one protein but at least at a simple level we can say that there's like 30,000 genes that they code for 30,000 proteins. We should not really think as if having a particular variation of a gene translates in any particular way to any characteristic that we could observe or relate to.
