The History of the Ball Drop in Times Square
The ball that will be lowered on Times Square in just about a week's time is over 11,000 pounds. There were only two years when the ball was not lowered in 1942 and 1943 due to fears of German subs during World War II. Up until a certain year they had men with ropes actually lowering the ball and they used a stopwatch to keep track of the time.
