The Franks had slowly but steadily migrated and settled their way into becoming the dominant political and military force along the lower Rhine. In late 405, one of those inevitable invasions of Italy inevitably came crashing down into Italy. The man behind the invasion was a new player on the board, driven by what should now be a familiar reason, the continued expansion of the Huns.
