The History of Cawri Shells
In china, around one thousand b c, agents began using a special type of shell called a cowry shell in exchange for other goods. In north america, indigenous people of the iroquois confederacy and algonquin tribes took shells they found in the ocean and ground them into beads called wampum. Paper money also was first invented by the chinese. Overtime paper money became easier to carry around than heavy metal coins.
