Politeness

In Our Time

CHAPTER

The New Idea of Politeness

Chatsbury had been taught by Locke, and the whole of his philosophy is a response to Locke. Chatsbury wants to detach virtue from punishment, and vice from punishment. He wants to say that there is something that's intrinsically good, and human beings have the capacity to recognize it and respond to it. And politeness is partly about feeling other people's feelings - traveling alongside them in conversation.
