Lindsay Coontz: My wish list would be to have events that take this as an opportunity to reset the American conversation. How do you create a national identity when your national identity has been shaped by imperial relations? She says there's been great work in Philadelphia, including firemen groups and jockey clubs. "I think better understanding how civic formation occurred ... would be a really good way to honor the spirit of the revolution," she says.
