i'm always reminded of the nineteenth century painter john martin, who did these astonishing paintings like the plains of heaven with kind of impossiblest, 80 mile horizons. And if these guys could have seen what we see on an average jet flight, they would have been absolutely staggered. By walking from the airport, i instantly ground myself in the most significant way and i stop living in this dispersed human geography that are joined up by air travel.
