The Importance of Color in Clothing
People wore whatever they could get their hands on and as expensive clothes as they could afford. Further down the social scale it has to do with cheapness and ease of access. But then there's what I call a vestrimanery food chain where people at the highest level use their clothing for a while before giving it to servants or friends. There's a very important market in used clothing and clothing was quite valuable.
