How Do We Know Which Are Good and Which Are Unprofitable?
We often receive sweet scents and delights that give us a foretaste of the delights of the heavenly country towards which we aspire. Alexander the Great, sailing upon the open seas, discovered Arabia Felix by perceiving the fragrant odors that the wind carried to him from that land. There are sensible constellations that are good and come from God, and others that are unprofitable, dangerous, and even pernicious. It is a general teaching my dear Philothea as regards the affections and passions of our souls, that we must judge them by their fruits. See Matthew 7-16.
