The End of the Cowboy Way of Life

The era of the great cattle droves declined very quickly in the 1880s. In 1890 the Census Bureau for the first time reported that the frontier was officially closed. Not long after that you could say the final nail in the coffin came in 1901 with the discovery of oil in Texas and in Indian country in the territory we now call Oklahoma. So after 1901 the era of droving is now definitely over, but vestiges of the cowboy life did carry on in certain places including rodeo circuit.
