He was writing at a time when the academy was very different, and social science institutions were very different. Yonow, thisd this kind of book that hopefully you all read for to day wouldn't be publishable right now,. not because it's bad or anything like that, but just because it doesn't make enough of a specific contribution to particular research literature.
