The Advantages of Starting a PhD
I would argue that the industrialization of research has to some extent really helped us progress more quickly as a field over the past decade. But at the same time, I think academia is more important now than it ever was because there are lots of very exciting side avenues that all of this research unlocks. And sometimes to explore these side paths, you often don't have anything other than curiosity guiding you. This is the kind of research that really thrives in an academic environment. Some of my relatively recent papers that were published to say ICML last year can be completely trained in a couple of hours on a single CPU.
