Metaphysical Desire and Original Sin
Metaphysical desire is literally the satanic drive to rival God in his metaphysical splendor. Gerard thinks we are always, if only subtly, plagued by this rebellious tormenting impulse. We may be able to tame it such that it's manageable, or even maybe unnoticeable, but we should eject any delusions that any of us can fully escape from it altogether.
