Native American Tribes in the Colorado River Basin
In 1922, no allocation was made to Native American tribes who weren't considered U.S. citizens at the time. There are now 29 federally recognized tribes in the Colorado River Basin. 22 of those tribes have rights to 3.2 million acre feet of water annually. That's over 20% of the river's annual water that flows through it. The Navajo Nation stretches across 27,000 square miles of Arizona and Utah.
