Luke: The sadness is that I think the two writers share is quite personal, and it's a type of sadness that is quite hard to speak about and share. There was something in what you wrote as the kind of recognition of suffering as being the fundamental base by which solidarity is possible. And from that point, it's possible to extend outwards. Diego Garcia strikes me in many ways, although its subject matter is trauma, essentially. It also strikes me as enormously hopeful, actually, both in its form in the possibility of communication between two authors and two narrators. That hope comes through most strongly when thinking about the activism and the opposition of the Chicosian people to this historical injustice
