Schirer: The Reichstag fire gave the Nazis two benefits. First, a persuaded president von Hindenburg to issue an authoritarian decree. Schirer believes that the Nazis themselves set the fire as a false flag operation. But in spite of all these advantages, the Nazis did not gain as many votes as they hoped.
