The Cult of Artemis in Ephesus

The unrest at the end of this chapter is similar to other events that we read of in first century settings. The disturb ances provoked by the concerns of demetrius and other ephesian craftsmen are threatening the success of their trades. A host of commercial enterprises rested upon the cult of artemis, or diana, as she was knownn roman religion. Her temple in ephesus was tremendously large. According to some estimates, it was four times the size of the parthenon and much larger than a football pitch.
