The Mixed Constitution in Rome
The idea was and this is very strong empirical assumption that you get recurring in the tradition that all human beings are corruptible. It's a guard against that that you had these well checks and balances which is actually almost the phrase. I mean that's a good translation of phrases used by Polybius as he celebrates Rome. So that's the mixed constitution but what about the idea of the ability to contest policies and ideas put forward by any particular group? Yes, Polybius of course deeply influences the Romans themselves including spectacularly Cicero who operates about 75 years later or so.
